Help - I'm completely new to this...

Hi,

I've recently decided that it would really suit me to use a scooter to get to work - am totally fed up with public transport and am ready for some independence. However, I have never ridden a bike before and only have a provisional licence, so need to do a CBT to be able to ride a 50cc - which is what I want to do. I'm really looking for advice about the best course of action in order to prepare me for the CBT -I think that I will need to practice on a bike before I go on the day. I am notoriously bad at practical tests and am worried that without adequate preparation I will not pass. Any advice is very very welcome - so if you have any, please help!

An expert will answer this question soon. Please feel free to add your own thoughts below

Hi there Shenegate! I'm not one of the experts but I'll try and pass on my experience.

I completed my CBT on a manual bike a couple of months ago. Before that my entire experience on a motorbike was the 1 hour trial thanks to Get On. So I was going in pretty much fresh.

You say you've never ridden a bike; do you mean a motorised one? If you've ridden a push bike then you've already got experience and confidence of balancing on two wheels. It is very easy to transfer those skills to motorised version and focus on the control of a motor.

Have you registered and taken your 1 hour free go via the Get On community? That's a great place to start and what made me decide to take it further for my CBT.

Don't fret too much about the 'test' aspect. It's more of an observation when you're out on the road to check you have the basic skills to ride the moped. Where do you get those skills? In the safety of the training yard, so you've got all morning to develop the skills.

Don't get too worked up about it; a lot of people take this step not only for the benefit of commuting, but also for enjoyment. So enjoy the day.

Hi Shenegate,

as Pitstarter suggests, the Free Ride is really the best way to ease your fears and try riding before the CBT!

It is done in a safe environment, with the help of trainers, so you will be able to go to the CBT much more prepared, already knowing what it feels like to be on a bike!

You can book the Free Ride here: http://www.geton.co.uk/content/whats-it-all-about

Let us know how it goes!

Hi there

Thanks for using the Get On website! It is good to read that you would like to commute using a 50cc machine.

Firstly, please don't see the CBT as a test. It is an assessment and there is no pass or fail. Some people adapt to riding very quickly and will show within a day that they can reach the required standard. For other people it takes a bit longer.

A good trainer will assess how confident you are and help you improve. You will need to do a minimum of a two hour road ride but the trainer will not rush this with you. If they feel that you are not ready, they will perhaps suggest a bit more time off road on the training pad.

I would suggest that you take a Free Ride and see how you feel. Talk to the trainer and see what they suggest.

Good luck and I am sure you will really enjoy your riding experience.

Best Wishes

Jenny
