Iridium Spark Plug
Iridium Spark Plug
Just fitted a rather expensive iridium spark plug to my sons 2006 Chinese 50cc moped with 27000km as I was getting sick of it burning out plugs three times a year. As the plug cost more than the moped is probably worth, maybe it is not something that is tried that often. However, my son tells me that it now accelerates much better and is much easier to start. Wondering if this was money well spent or a sign of how knackered the old plug was?

Hi Steven
Yes Iridium plugs are hugely more expensive but last hugely longer too. More importantly they'll give a top rate performance through that extended life too.
But, brand new, you shouldn't actually get a noticably stronger spark from that over a "standard" plug, assuming it's properly gapped. After all, the spark is primarily derived from the coil.
I wonder if you've now got a slightly different plug rating? If you've been burning out 3 plugs a year it sounds as though you've had the wrong heat rating. The iridium will cope much better with that.
People burning plugs out should speak to their knowledgable local dealer for advice on plug ratings. It could save you some hard earned - still what price reliability!
And a happy xmas
