What would be the best moped for me?

Hi All

One of our twitter followers @justinmunro, has asked the following question:

"@getontweets - interested in a cheap (maybe second hand) moped for commuting to work, any suggestions?"

Do any of you here on the get on community have a great bit of advice? Tell us in the comments below or if you use twitter, go and let Justin know on his feed..

Thanks

Dan

Hi Dan

Good to see a fellow Essex boy posting on the Geton page. Unfortunately the world and his wife are out there looking for a cheap moped. On a Saturday I must get 10-12 enquiries per day. Parents want them for their kid’s so they can get their own lives back from being Dad’s taxi. The unfortunate truth is that most are sold to 16 year olds, who let their mates ride then and inevitably they fall off and don’t have the money to repair them, hence they are trashed within 3-6 months. Best advice for you would be to buy a new recognised branded scooter (not a cheap import) with full manufactures and dealer back up, use it and look after it and when you come to sell it you will have something with a value. Some of the manufactures offer free or subsidised insurance, so the saving made there could be put forward towards the cost of new. We are currently including the C.B.T in with the price, saving another £120.00.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the post Ian.

Are there any makes/models you would suggest? I heard the Aprilia SR 50 is good. Although new it is quite expensive. I'm looking for a sub £1000 scooter ideally, unless there is a good finance deal.

I see what you're saying about second hand but l suppose it would be ok to buy second hand from a dealer?

I will be doing about a 7 mile commute on mainly 50/40/30 mph roads if that helps.

Thanks.

Hi Mong

The Aprilia SR50 is fine, but go for a pre fuel injected model as I believe the cause less trouble. The same goes for the Suzuki AY50 Katana which shared the Aprilia fuel injected engine and was like a boomerang for us; every time they left the shop they would go round the block and land on the forecourt again. If you have a maximum of £1,000 then buy a quality branded machine, don’t worry about age, it is the way it has been maintained which is important.  I have a couple of elderly customers who keep their mopeds for 5-6 years, and cover quite high mileages’, bur have then serviced as per manufactures recommendations and do not skip on quality parts e.g brake pads and tyres. Your average 16 year old only wants his ped to “rag round with his mates” ride on bald tyres, let brake pads wear down to the metal, scoring brake discs, and never have the money for a service. On top of this they meddle with the engine trying to get more oomph. If you can find a good one in your local dealer then go for it, as I stated earlier they are very sort after here in Essex and hard to find.

You should be able to get a new Yamaha Neos for around £72.00 per month with a £100.00 deposit. The Neos is a 4 stroke, so no messing around with separate oil, and will return well in excess of 100 m.p.g. If bought new you will also get a year’s manufactures warranty, three years before your first M.O.T, one year’s breakdown recovery and free T.P.O insurance or a subsidised T.P.F.T.

Hope this helps

Hi all, is a scooter more economical than a 125 bike? i have thought of changing from a cbr 125 to a scooter, to save on petrol, and to not have to use the clutch whilst stuck in rush hour traffic.
