The Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test

Research has shown that more experienced riders and drivers scan the road and surroundings better. This means they are quicker to recognise the clues that a hazardous situation is developing and able to take action before the danger happens.

Taking the Hazard Perception Test

The motorcycle hazard perception test is part of the multiple-choice theory test. You need to pass both the hazard perception test and the multiple-choice theory test in order to successfully pass your motorcycle theory test.

Failing one part of the test means you will fail the whole test and you will have to take both parts again, so it is important to study and practice both.

The motorcycle theory test is specific for motorcycles, so even if you have passed your theory test in another vehicle you will still need to pass a motorcycle theory test.

The Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test

The hazard perception test will follow after you have finished the multiple-choice theory test.

The test will show you a series of short video clips of an everyday road scenario where at least one hazard develops. Only one clip will feature 2 developing hazards.

In total, there are 14 clips which will have 15 developing hazards

You will need to click the mouse every time you see a hazard developing.

How the Hazard Perception Scoring System Works

The earlier you notice the hazard developing, the higher your score will be.

The maximum score for a developing hazard is 5 marks.

The scoring system is designed to notice continuous or pattern clicking and you will automatically score zero for that clip.

The pass mark is 44 out of 75.

In the images below you can see how the scoring works. If you click when you notice the car is starting to come out into your line of traffic you get 5 points.

As it moves further out you get less points.

If you wait until the car has finally stopped and the motorcycle has had to react to the car, you score no points.

Example of a Developing Hazard

The images below show how the developing hazard is scored within the hazard perception test.

The sooner you see a developing hazard and click the mouse, the higher you will score:

Mock Motorcycle Hazard Perception Test

The GetOn mock motorcycle hazard perception tests give you a taste of what you will see in the official test.

You have the option of taking one test or five. If you take one test you need to score 3 points to pass, if you take five tests you need at least 15 points.

At the end of each test you will be told if you passed or failed and have the opportunity to see your score.

Please watch this introductory video before you the mock tests. You will see a video like this one before you take your real hazard perception test.

This test is FREE and is available for you to take as many times as you wish. It is only a representation of the official test and the scores gained here do not count towards passing your test.
