Rail fares will rise by 5.9% on average, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) announced today. To see how much your train tickets, or your commuter season ticket, will cost from January 2012, you can now go to the National Rail website.

A 12 month season ticket from Camberley to central London, for example, will cost you £3,948 from January 2nd 2012. But for the same price you could gain your full motorcycle licence, buy a motorcycle and all the kit, and still have money left for the first £20 tank of petrol.

With smaller motorcycles doing over 100 miles per gallon (mpg), you could easily cover the 30 mile each way commute from Camberley to London on less than £20 per week. Try our travel cost calculator to see how much you could save.

Other advantages? You’ll probably save time (Transport for London’s research found a motorbike or scooter could cover the same journey a third quicker than a car), you’re not dependent on anybody else’s timetable – and you will always get a seat!

So don’t get angry – get riding. You can even have a free motorcycle ride, to see if you like it. Just enter your details on the left and we’ll link you up with a qualified motorcycle trainer near you. They will lend you all the safety kit and get you rolling safely, at your own pace and away from public roads.

A free ride – there’s another thing the rail companies won’t be offering you!
