Since 1979 the Dakar Rally (originally the Paris-Dakar) has been, in the words of its founder Thierry Sabine, “A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind”.

Over the years, the route has changed but the challenge remains. This year’s event is under way in South America, where nearly 200 motorcycles set off alongside cars, trucks and quads, to tackle the punishing 8,363 kilometre course that crosses mountains, deserts and rivers. Each of the 15 days would exhaust most riders, and with only one rest day and repairs to be done overnight, it’s a true marathon.

There is a British Team – Dakar Team GB – but the best-performing team so far is Red Bull with Cyril Despres and Marc Coma.

The Dakar Rally is about as tough as it gets for a motorcyclist. Unless you’re an experienced off-road rider we suggest you get a bit more practice before you enter it. Check out our introduction to Off Road Motorcycling for tips on how to get going, what off-road kit you need and where to get some training.

Meanwhile,  you can play the Dakar Virtual Rally game online from the comfort of your sofa.
